Assistant Athletics Director for Equipment Operations – University of Houston

The Assistant Athletic Director for Equipment Operations will lead, manage, and oversee all aspects of the University of Houston Department of Athletics equipment operations for student-athletes, teams, and staff. Major job responsibilities include staff management; policy creation, implementation, and enforcement; provide strategic resource management and leadership; contract negotiations, contract management and oversight of the working relationship with department’s shoe and apparel provider and other vendors.

Oversight of inventory, ordering, receiving and distribution of all athletic equipment and apparel.
Lead and develop a team of full-time equipment staff and student managers.
Director will act as equipment liaison for Championships, Bowl Games, equipment procurement and design of Athletic Department Support departments (i.e., Sports Med, Performance Nutrition, Cougar Pride, Content Solutions, etc.) as well as logistics of Football equipment truck.
Travels to away football games and other away events as needed; oversees the transportation of all football game day equipment and set up and breakdown of the locker room and stadium sideline for competition.
Coordinates corporate contracts for apparel and equipment; and oversees the ordering process of apparel and/or equipment for development activities, campus, the gift shop, and other special events.
Ensures that all protective equipment is NOCSAE certified and approved for competition.

Individual will collaborate with coaches and staff to address the equipment needs proactively and effectively of all the department’s intercollegiate athletic programs including long-term planning for Equipment unit and future equipment needs for all sport programs and administrative areas, as well as budgeting and procurement oversight. Individual will be responsible for meeting safety requirements and the oversight of maintenance and replacement plans for current office and laundry services and equipment.

The Assistant Athletic Director, Equipment Operations will take the lead and work with the department’s Facilities staff for all facility equipment related projects and initiatives. Position will meet regularly with other Department Directors and coaches to address overall department needs. The successful candidate will have the ability to work with department and campus staff on additional projects that may arise and continue to maintain the high standards and safety requirements of the department following campus, state, conference and NCAA rules and regulations.

The ideal candidate will possess/demonstrate the following:

Knowledge of NOCSAE regulations as they pertains to protective equipment
Experience with laundry services for athletic teams
Ability to perform in a professional manner in a high-pressure environment
Ability to multi-task and be flexible
Basic computer experience
Ability to keep detailed records
Ability to work flexible and irregular hours including traveling to away games, weekends, and holidays as needed

Education and Experience:

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree
3-5 Years of experience working within an FBS, FCS or professional team equipment room
Extensive knowledge of AEMA practices and methodologies
Proficient in the use of basic computer applications
Service based attitude and the ability to work well within a diverse workplace
Organized and has the ability to work in a rapidly changing and fast-paced environment
Athletic Equipment Manager Certified, or ability to be certified within one year
Knowledge of applicable rules of the American Athletic Conference, the NCAA, as well as other internal and external stakeholders associated with the University of Houston

In addition, our preferred qualifications include:

Five years working in an FBS, FCS, or professional team equipment room
Experience with Nike, Adidas, and/or Under Armor ordering systems and product
Knowledge of University branding, logos, and trademark regulations, as well as conference and NCAA rules as they pertain to recruiting, equipment and uniform logo requirement
Experience with Sportsoft (or competitor) inventory control system
