Cummings High School mourns after student collapses, dies at football practice

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — Before Varsity football practice began Monday at Hugh M. Cummings High School, a 15-year-old student athlete reportedly collapsed on his way to the field.

ABSS officials say the athletic trainer was nearby and immediately began giving CPR until EMS arrived and hospitalized the student. The 10th grader, Malik Mebane, was tragically pronounced dead at the hospital.

This loss has rocked the entire District and school community.

Alamance Burlington School System is committed to supporting all affected friends and family members of Mebane in this difficult time of grief. Counselors and support staff have been sent to the school to assist in any way possible.

The district wants to thank the community for their outpouring of love and support for the school and students. Malik’s family and friends remain at the top of everyone’s thoughts and prayers.
