As a Sports Specialist (Athletic Operations & Equipment Manager), you will:
- Possess the academic credentials and additional criteria necessary for the rank of Sports Specialist (Athletic Operations & Equipment Manager) in the Department of Physical Education and Athletics, as delineated in the Qualification Standards for Faculty Appointment and Promotion, or approved waiver of such credentials/criteria. In addition, the employee’s background and credentials demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of Athletic Operations & Equipment Manager.
- Carry out the duties and responsibilities in a competent manner and maintain high standards of conduct which will reflect favorably upon the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the Maritime Administration, the Department of Transportation, and the United States Government.
- Have responsibility for continued professional growth which may be evidenced by such activities as advanced study, publication of results of research, consulting, productive activity in his/her professional area, and overall service to the Academy.
- Be expected to keep abreast of developments in the relevant specialized fields of education and professional discipline. The primary objective must be the resulting enrichment and improvement of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Each faculty member, whether in uniform or civilian attire, has an obligation to maintain an acceptable appearance in bearing and dress.
The ideal candidate for this position must be highly motivated and experienced professional who works to support the Mission of the USMMA. They must be capable of adjusting to various work environments, physical demands, and schedules. They must be able to work well within the structure of the physical education & athletics department team and must be positive contributor.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
- TRIAL PERIOD: This is an Excepted Service position. This job will be filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive service. Applicants selected for an excepted service position may be subject to a two-year trial period.
- GOVERNMENT TRAVEL CARD: This position involves travel. A government contractor-issued travel card will be issued and must be retained for official business only.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the Education and Specialized Experience requirements below. You must include experience in your resume and provide supporting documentation for verification.
To qualify for a Sports Specialist (Athletic Operations & Equipment Manager), you must have:
- At least 1 sports season of experience in athletic operations or 1 sports season of experience as an equipment manager or 1 academic year of teaching in a classroom environment.
Highly Desirable:
- Athletic operations or equipment manager experience related to football or lacrosse.
- Athletic operations or equipment manager experience at the collegiate level.
- Experience related to purchasing equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
- Experience tracking equipment or uniform inventory.
- Be willing to work weekday evenings and weekends.
- Highly motivated and experienced professionals possessing integrity, stamina, and ingenuity, and be capable of adjusting to various work environments, physical demands, and schedules.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
- Technical Competence – Uses knowledge that is acquired through formal training or extensive on-the-job experience to perform one’s job; works with, understands, and evaluates technical information related to the job; advises others on technical issues.
- Education and Training – Knowledge of teaching, training, research, making presentations, lecturing, testing, and other instructional method
- Planning and Evaluating – Organizes work, sets priorities, and determines resource requirements; determines short- or long-term goals and strategies to achieve them; coordinates with other organizations or parts of the organization to accomplish goals; monitors progress and evaluates outcomes.
- Customer Service– Works with clients and customers (e.g., any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve problems, or satisfy expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study — physical education.
NOTE: Applicants who do not possess a Bachelor’s Degree in a field closely related to the duties required for the position may substitute a Bachelor’s Degree in an unrelated field if they also possess significant professional training and specialized experience that is closely related to the duties of the position at a level of complexity and responsibility equivalent to those performed in the position.
