Athletic Equipment Specialist – Western Michigan

Position Summary
Supports the WMU Department of Athletics in all aspects of equipment management. Primary focus
will be with Football and Hockey teams.

Major Duties
• Assists with managing day-to-day operations of the Department of Athletics’ equipment rooms.
• Assists with equipment purchases and inventory for varsity sports and staff.
• Evaluates and monitors effectiveness of services, policies, and procedures. Updates and
improves policies and procedures for future growth. Adheres to University, state, conference,
and NCAA policies and procedures regarding the issuance of equipment and services for all
intercollegiate sports.
• Assists with managing apparel embellishment for cost effectiveness, consistency, and
protection of brand. Assists with managing relationships with Adidas and other vendors.
• Ensures that student-athlete apparel is laundered and ready for distribution daily.
• Assists with hiring and training student employees. Determines work assignments and
schedules to accommodate the extended hours and complex scheduling of collegiate practices
and sporting events.
• Assists with the maintenance of all athletic equipment and conducts a seasonal equipment
inventory for each assigned sport using appropriate inventory computer programs.
• Remains current with evolving safety standards to reduce liability. Ensures proper fitting and
maintenance of all sports equipment to provide a safe environment for student athletes.
• Assists with ensuring the availability of equipment support for visiting teams and officials.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current
employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required Education
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

Required Experience
• Minimum of 6 months experience working in an Intercollegiate Athletics equipment operations
environment, with preference given to experience working with football.
• Understanding of blood borne pathogens, exposure to soiled laundry and hazardous chemicals.

Required Other
• Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA) certification, or ability to be certified within 1
year of starting the position.
• Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including weekends and holidays.

Desired Qualifications
• Experience in NCAA Division I level preferred.
• Experience in football operations preferred.

Physical Requirements
Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25
pounds, but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in an environment with exposure to somewhat disagreeable or hazardous
conditions.
