NIU Football Players Adopt SAFR Helmet Covers to Improved Player Safety

Northern Illinois University football players are utilizing SAFR Helmet Covers during preseason camp for added safety. NIU is the first Mid-American Conference team and the first Football Bowl Subdivision team in Illinois to implement the soft outer shell covers. The covers, which act like airbags, absorb and dissipate energy from hits, reducing the risk of concussions. The decision was based on data provided by the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab, which showed up to 77 percent improved protection and a 72 percent reduction in linear concussive impacts with the helmet cover. All NIU players have chosen to wear the SAFR Helmet Covers during practice.
